Use Case #5

Natural fibers

This value chain focuses on the valorisation of hemp and flax residues, which originate as byproducts from fibre-crop cultivation and primary processing. Instead of being underutilised or directed to low-value applications, these residual biomass streams are repurposed as feedstock for producing high-quality textile fibres. Through decortication, mechanical cottonization, and subsequent optional treatments such as boiling and bleaching, the raw residues are progressively refined into Cottonized Hemp Fiber and Cottonized Flax Fiber. These processing steps transform coarse plant fibres into soft, spinnable, cotton-like fibres suitable for integration into existing textile manufacturing workflows. The resulting cottonized fibres can be supplied to yarn producers and other textile companies seeking sustainable, bio-based raw materials. This value chain covers: the sourcing of hemp and flax residues, fibre extraction and cottonization processes, optional boiling and bleaching treatments, and the production of the final cottonized fibre materials.
